With the 2006 elections just a short time away, we
are in the process of recruiting candidates. The negative,
attack driven campaigns against Democrats over the past 15 years have
no doubt taken a toll on our pool of candidates. That is quickly
changing.
Democrats have organized like never before, throwing
off the shackles of corporate funding and raising money via grassroots
efforts. We are organizing here in Oconee County, but we need
candidates to step up. If you believe in responsible government
spending and support progressive ideas for our community, we need you!

Have You Had Enough? If So, Democrats are Stepping Up
March 30, 2006,
Seneca, SC: For the tens of thousands of voters in Oconee County
who are frustrated with our local and state government, the Democratic
Party is proud to announce a field of honest candidates who are ready to
serve our county.
Candidates filing for office include:
Sandra Orr, Probate Judge
Susie Cornelius, S.C. House District #1
Michael Evatt, County Council District #1
Emily Whitaker, County Council District #3
Sandra Orr, the long time incumbent Probate Judge for Oconee
County is seeking another term. Sandra is a well-respected judge, has
served the county well and is supported by an outstanding staff.
Susie Cornelius, a resident of Mountain Rest, has become a
champion of defending citizens from government run amuck. When the
County Council began to move forward on an illegal and unconstitutional
taxation plan two years ago, Cornelius put up her own money to fight
them and stood alone in defending our rights. Her lawsuit was
successful, as an appeals court judge ruled the plan illegal. Cornelius
seeks to take her passion for effective government to Columbia.
Michael Evatt, a well-known native of Oconee County, is running
to offer the voters in District #1 a choice other than the status-quo.
Mike knows that the people have had enough of this Council and it is
time for a change.
Emily Whitaker of Seneca is a political newcomer. A nurse and
past resident of the Utica Mill community, Emily felt called to serve
because citizens in Seneca are underrepresented and disconnected from
the dealings of the County Council. She is an intelligent and
thoughtful woman and will be a ray of sunshine to politics in Oconee
County.
Chairman Ken Campbell provided the following comment regarding candidate
filings today:
I am so proud of the fine candidates filing today as Democrats. All
over this great country, people are waking up to the failures of the
Bush Administration and the culture of corruption that has blossomed in
Washington and Columbia in the last decade. Our candidates represent
real democracy in action: Citizens called to serve who are unconnected
with the current party in power.
