Let's move forward. Let's win.
In less than a month South Carolina Democrats will gather and elect a new chair to lead our Party for the next two years. This convention is very important and I hope you will be able to attend on Saturday, April 29th.
And at this convention, I ask that you vote for me to be our next state party chair.
My personal motto is: "If you build it, they will come." And I have a long record of building within our Democratic Party and its ideals. I've been on the South Carolina Democratic Party's Executive Committee, for example, representing Georgetown County since 2008, and currently serve as the president of the South Carolina Democratic Women's Council. I'm also Southern Regional Director for the National Federation of Democratic Women.
I know how to build an organization. Under my leadership, we've made history time after time, including hosting Hillary Clinton for her first SC stop as a presidential candidate in May 2015 and Sen. Bernie Sanders keynoting at my Southern Regional Meeting for the National Federation of Democratic Women in November 2015. In 2016, I brought the NFDW national convention to Charleston.
I announced my decision to run for Chair on December 7 because I want to continue building. I am running because our Party faces serious challenges, and these challenges need to be addressed by serious leaders who understand what it will take for our Party to start winning again.
We cannot continue to operate in the same unsuccessful manner; we must take bold moves if our candidates are to be competitive in 2018 and beyond. Bold moves require fresh new dynamic leadership…and that’s what I intend to provide.
I'll provide leadership in the implementation of candidate recruitment and development; more aggressive and widespread fundraising; the building of stronger coalitions; and the implementation of high tech campaign tools to assist our candidates in winning elections.
I am not running for Chair because I need a job. As your Chair, I promise not to take a salary. Not only can our Party not afford it, but I also believe that our Chair ought to continue to serve as a volunteer. In addition, the positions of Chair and Executive Director must continue to remain separate because it's important to have checks and balances.
Now more than ever we need to operate our Party with the greatest transparency and accountability. As your Chair, I promise to serve with the highest integrity and have an open-door policy that is inclusive to all.
I am proud and honored to have the support of Governor Jim Hodges, House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford, Legislative Black Caucus Chair John King and scores of other Democratic leaders and organizations from across the state.
